How to pinpoint whether I'm having problems with my c.v. joints or is it my c.v. bearings that need replaced ?

I own a 1994 Mazda Protege LX, and have been expieriencing a problem on the front drivers side of a loud noise that sounds like something rubbing against the tire wall, but nothing is touching. And I can feel the vibration from this in my gas pedal, and it gets louder and worse when i speed up.
