How do i find the gradient of a curve?

well am supposed to write a tutorial for cl about how to go about finding the gradient at a point on the graph. i know the tangent mwthod and how it goes but i see this other thing d/y and d/x. Can anyone please explain to me what this is about and how it works? Please?
